Osteopathy is a manual approach that treats the body as an interconnected system: assessment looks beyond the painful area to how the regions around it are moving and loading.
Techniques include soft tissue work, joint mobilisation and manipulation, muscle energy techniques and stretching. In practice there is considerable overlap with physiotherapy and chiropractic, the differences are more in approach and emphasis than in the techniques used.
Scope. Used here for musculoskeletal problems. We do not make claims about osteopathy treating conditions outside that scope.
You have persistent musculoskeletal pain that has not responded to treatment focused on the painful area. You prefer a hands-on approach. Or you have a problem involving several regions rather than one joint.
Lower Back Pain, Neck Pain, Frozen Shoulder, Spondylosis.
Assessment covers more of you than the painful area, which surprises some people , a shoulder problem may involve examining the neck, upper back and ribs.
Treatment is hands-on and largely comfortable. Mild soreness for a day afterwards is common.
Before you book
The approaches overlap substantially. Osteopathy places more emphasis on whole-body assessment and manual technique; physiotherapy on graded exercise and loading. Many people here have both.
Manual therapy has reasonable support for short-term relief of musculoskeletal pain. Broader claims made for osteopathy in some settings are not well supported, and we do not make them.
