Draft, awaiting clinical review

The copy on this page is written and is waiting on clinical sign-off. It carries noindex and stays out of the sitemap until a clinician reviews it and a review date is recorded, which is what makes the medical statements on it attributable.

Sports physiotherapy treats injuries in people who train or compete. The techniques overlap with general physiotherapy; the difference is what counts as recovered. Being pain-free walking around is not the same as being ready to sprint, change direction or take contact.

So treatment runs further. Once symptoms settle, the work moves to restoring the strength, power and control your sport demands, and then to testing that it is actually there.

Who it helps

You have picked up an injury training or competing. An old problem flares whenever you increase your load. You have been cleared to return but do not feel ready. Or you want to train through a niggle without making it worse.

Level does not matter. What matters is that you have something specific to get back to.

Conditions we treat with this

Hamstring Strain, ACL Tear & Knee Ligament Injury, Rotator Cuff Injury, Shin Splints, Achilles Tendinopathy, Meniscus Tear, Ankle Sprain, Tennis Elbow.

How it works

  1. Assessment. What was injured, how it happened, and what your sport demands of it. The mechanism of injury usually tells us more than the imaging.
  2. Settling symptoms. Manual therapy, soft tissue work, and electrotherapy where useful, enough to start loading, not as the treatment itself.
  3. Rebuilding capacity. Progressive loading of the injured tissue. This is the part that determines whether you reinjure.
  4. Sport-specific work. Speed, change of direction, jumping, throwing, whatever your sport actually requires.
  5. Testing before return. Objective criteria rather than a date on a calendar or how you feel on the day.

What to expect

Bring your training kit. Assessment includes watching you move at speed and under load where your injury allows it, not just testing you on a plinth.

You will get an honest view on training in the meantime. Complete rest is rarely the answer for an athlete, and there is usually something you can keep doing safely while the injured area recovers.

What it is used for

Conditions we treat with this

Generated from the condition pages themselves, so this list and the treatments named on each of those pages are always the same list read from two directions.

  • Achilles Tendinopathy

    Achilles tendon pain

Pain and stiffness in the Achilles tendon. Mid-portion and insertional behave differently, and the distinction changes the programme.

  • ACL Tear & Knee Ligament Injury

    knee ligament injury

A twisting or pivoting injury to the knee's stabilising ligaments. The rehabilitation determines the outcome more than the surgical decision does.

  • Hamstring Strain

    pulled hamstring

A tear at the back of the thigh, with one of the highest reinjury rates in sport. Strength at long muscle lengths is what changes that.

  • Rotator Cuff Injury

    shoulder tendon injury

Tendinopathy through to full-thickness tears in the four muscles that stabilise the shoulder. A tear on a scan is not automatically the cause.

  • Shin Splints

    shin pain in runners

Pain along the inner shin in runners. A load problem that can progress toward a stress fracture if it is worked through.

Frequently asked questions

How soon can I train again?

Usually sooner than you expect for something, and later than you would like for everything. We will tell you what you can keep doing rather than stopping you entirely.

Will you clear me to play?

We will test you against criteria for your sport and tell you honestly what the results show. Where a doctor or club is involved in the decision, we share our findings with them.

Can you help if I am not injured?

Yes, see [Sports Injury Assessment & Screening] and [Athlete Testing Lab].
