Draft, awaiting clinical review

The copy on this page is written and is waiting on clinical sign-off. It carries noindex and stays out of the sitemap until a clinician reviews it and a review date is recorded, which is what makes the medical statements on it attributable.

Manual techniques applied to muscle and fascia: sustained pressure, stripping techniques, trigger point release and active release methods.

Used where muscular tightness or trigger points are contributing to pain or limiting movement. It creates a window in which movement and loading become easier, which is where the durable change comes from.

Who it helps

You have persistent muscular tightness. You have tender points that refer pain elsewhere. You have restricted movement that feels muscular rather than joint- related. Or you want hands-on work alongside an exercise programme.

Conditions we treat with this

Neck Pain, Lower Back Pain, Cervicogenic Headache, Tennis Elbow, Plantar Fasciitis, Frozen Shoulder.

How it works

  1. Assessment. Which tissue is involved and whether it is the cause or a consequence.
  2. Treatment. Sustained pressure and specific techniques to the relevant tissue.
  3. Movement afterwards. Applied while the tissue is more mobile.
  4. Addressing the cause. Tightness is usually a response to something. If that is not changed, it returns.

What to expect

The work can be firm, particularly over trigger points, and referred sensation elsewhere is common and expected. It should not be something you brace through.

Mild soreness for a day afterwards is normal.

What it is used for

Conditions we treat with this

Generated from the condition pages themselves, so this list and the treatments named on each of those pages are always the same list read from two directions.

  • Cervicogenic Headache

    headache coming from the neck

A headache generated in the cervical spine and felt in the head. Identifiable by pattern, and testable in an assessment.

  • Frozen Shoulder

Loss of shoulder movement in every direction, including when someone else moves your arm. Slow, and staged.

  • Heel Pain

Under the heel, behind it, or around the sides. The location and the timing are what separate the causes.

  • Neck Pain

Several different problems produce similar-feeling neck pain. Working out which one you have is what determines the treatment.

  • Plantar Fasciitis

pain under the heel, worst on the first steps of the day

The commonest cause of heel pain. A tissue-loading problem, which is why it responds to loading rather than to rest.

  • Tennis Elbow

pain on the outside of the elbow

A tendon problem at the outside of the elbow, far more often from work and gripping than from sport.

Frequently asked questions

Why does pressing here hurt somewhere else?

Trigger points commonly refer pain to predictable areas away from the point itself. It is expected and it helps confirm what is involved.

How is this different from sports massage?

Considerable overlap. This is applied to a specific clinical finding within a treatment plan; [Sports Massage] is oriented around training and recovery.

Will the tightness come back?

If what caused it is unchanged, yes. Which is why treatment includes addressing that rather than releasing the same tissue repeatedly.
