Draft, awaiting clinical review

The copy on this page is written and is waiting on clinical sign-off. It carries noindex and stays out of the sitemap until a clinician reviews it and a review date is recorded, which is what makes the medical statements on it attributable.

Physiotherapy after total or partial knee or hip replacement. The aims are restoring range of movement, rebuilding the muscle lost around the joint before and after surgery, and returning to walking without aids.

Early movement matters particularly after knee replacement, where range lost in the first weeks becomes progressively harder to regain.

Who it helps

You have had a knee or hip replacement. You are approaching surgery and want to prepare, pre-operative strengthening generally improves recovery. Or your recovery has stalled and you want it addressed.

Conditions we treat with this

Knee Pain, plus post-replacement presentations.

How it works

  1. Early movement and swelling management, within your surgeon’s protocol.
  2. Restoring range. Particularly knee extension and flexion, worked consistently in the early weeks.
  3. Strength. The muscle around the joint, which is usually weak before surgery as well as after.
  4. Walking. Progressing off aids, with attention to how you actually walk rather than just whether you can.
  5. Return to activity. Stairs, distance, and the things you had stopped doing.

What to expect

Bring your operation note and any precautions your surgeon has given, especially after hip replacement where certain movements may be restricted initially.

Early sessions are uncomfortable at times. Progress is steady rather than dramatic, and consistency matters more than intensity.

Frequently asked questions

How soon should I start?

Usually very soon after surgery, as directed by your surgeon. Early movement matters, particularly after knee replacement.

Will I get full movement back?

Most people regain functional range. How much depends on the joint, the surgery and your range beforehand. You will get an honest estimate rather than a promise.

Can I prepare before the operation?

Yes, and it is worth doing. Going in stronger generally means recovering better.
