Draft, awaiting clinical review

The copy on this page is written and is waiting on clinical sign-off. It carries noindex and stays out of the sitemap until a clinician reviews it and a review date is recorded, which is what makes the medical statements on it attributable.

Blocked until answered:

  • Is there a qualified podiatrist on staff, or is this foot and gait assessment with orthotic prescription delivered by a physiotherapist? Different claims, different wording.

Assessment of the foot and lower limb, and where indicated, custom insoles made to your feet.

Insoles help some people considerably and others not at all. What determines which is assessment, how your foot behaves under load, what your symptoms follow, and what your footwear is doing. They are prescribed here after examination rather than sold as a standard solution.

Who it helps

You have heel, arch or forefoot pain. You have recurring lower limb problems as a runner. You have been told you have flat feet or high arches. Or you have diabetes and need foot care advice.

Conditions we treat with this

Plantar Fasciitis, Heel Pain, Shin Splints, Achilles Tendinopathy, Knee Pain.

How it works

  1. Assessment. Foot structure, how it behaves when loaded, and your walking and running mechanics.
  2. Footwear review. Bring the shoes you actually wear. Often the shoe matters more than the insole.
  3. Deciding whether insoles help. Not everyone needs them, and we will say so.
  4. Casting and manufacture where they are indicated.
  5. Fitting and review. Break-in guidance and a follow-up to check they are working.

What to expect

Bring all the shoes you regularly wear, everyday, work and sports. Wear shorts or clothing that lets your lower legs be seen.

If insoles are not indicated, you will be told that rather than sold a pair.

What it is used for

Conditions we treat with this

Generated from the condition pages themselves, so this list and the treatments named on each of those pages are always the same list read from two directions.

  • Heel Pain

Under the heel, behind it, or around the sides. The location and the timing are what separate the causes.

  • Plantar Fasciitis

pain under the heel, worst on the first steps of the day

The commonest cause of heel pain. A tissue-loading problem, which is why it responds to loading rather than to rest.

  • Shin Splints

    shin pain in runners

Pain along the inner shin in runners. A load problem that can progress toward a stress fracture if it is worked through.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need custom insoles or will off-the-shelf do?

Off-the-shelf works well for many people. Custom is worth it where foot shape or the specific loading pattern requires it. The assessment establishes which.

How long do they last?

It depends on use and body weight. We will give you an expected life and check them at review.

Will they fix my flat feet?

No. Insoles change how load is distributed; they do not change foot structure. Flat feet are also common and frequently painless.
