Draft, awaiting clinical review

The copy on this page is written and is waiting on clinical sign-off. It carries noindex and stays out of the sitemap until a clinician reviews it and a review date is recorded, which is what makes the medical statements on it attributable.

Rehabilitation is the staged work of getting function back after an operation, a fracture, or a period in a cast or sling. It follows a sequence, protecting healing tissue, restoring movement, rebuilding strength, then returning to the activity you care about.

Surgery repairs a structure. Rehabilitation is what turns that repair into a working limb, and the result depends heavily on it being done properly and to the right timeline.

Which one do you need?

You have had an operation and been referred for physiotherapy. Post-Surgical Rehabilitation, or the specific page for your procedure below.

ACL reconstruction or knee ligament surgery. ACL & Knee Ligament Rehab.

Knee or hip replacement. Knee & Hip Replacement Rehab.

Shoulder surgery, repair, decompression or stabilisation. Shoulder Surgery Rehab.

A fracture, or a limb out of a cast or sling. Fracture & Post-Immobilisation Rehab.

Working with your surgeon

Every surgeon has a protocol, and timelines differ between procedures and between surgeons. We follow your surgeon’s protocol and will contact them where anything is unclear rather than assuming.

Bring your operation note and any post-operative instructions to your first appointment.

Treatments

What sits under Rehabilitation

Each is scoped tightly so they do not overlap. If you are not sure which applies, book a general assessment.

What it is used for

Conditions we treat with this

Generated from the condition pages themselves, so this list and the treatments named on each of those pages are always the same list read from two directions.

  • ACL Tear & Knee Ligament Injury

    knee ligament injury

A twisting or pivoting injury to the knee's stabilising ligaments. The rehabilitation determines the outcome more than the surgical decision does.

  • Meniscus Tear

    knee cartilage tear

A tear in the knee's load-spreading cartilage. Acute traumatic tears and degenerative ones behave differently and are managed differently.

  • Rotator Cuff Injury

    shoulder tendon injury

Tendinopathy through to full-thickness tears in the four muscles that stabilise the shoulder. A tear on a scan is not automatically the cause.

Before you book

Frequently asked questions

When should I start?

Usually as directed by your surgeon, and often sooner than people expect. Bring your post-operative instructions and we will work to them.

Will it hurt?

Early rehabilitation after surgery is uncomfortable at times. It should be manageable and it should be explained. Nothing is pushed beyond what your protocol allows.

How long does rehabilitation take?

That depends on the procedure and on you. You will get an estimate at assessment rather than a promise beforehand.
